What Is Mangal Dosha
What is Mangal Dosha?
Mangal Dosha, also known as Manglik Dosha or Kuja Dosha, is traditionally considered to occur when Mars occupies certain houses in a person's birth chart. Mars represents energy, courage, assertiveness, passion, action and aggression. When Mars strongly influences houses associated with self, family, home, marriage, transformation or intimacy, traditional Jyotish may interpret the placement as creating additional heat or friction in relationships.
Important Note
Being Manglik does not automatically mean that a person will have an unhappy marriage, divorce or marital problems. Mangal Dosha is only one factor in traditional horoscope analysis and should be evaluated together with the complete birth chart, planetary strength, the 7th house, 7th lord, Venus, Jupiter, Moon, Navamsa and the partner's horoscope.

Reference Points
Mangal Dosha from Lagna
The most commonly used reference point is the Ascendant or Lagna. Mars is examined relative to the Lagna to understand its influence on personality and relationship-related houses.
Mangal Dosha from Moon
Mars is also examined from the Moon in some traditions. This is associated with emotional responses, mental patterns and relationship sensitivity.
Mangal Dosha from Venus
Venus is associated with love, relationships, marriage and attraction. Some traditions therefore examine Mars from Venus when assessing Manglik influence.
How To Calculate
Calculate the Ascendant/Lagna from the birth date, time and location.
Determine the house occupied by Mars from the Lagna.
Check whether Mars is in one of the traditionally considered Manglik houses.
Repeat the assessment from the Moon if the selected tradition uses Moon-based Manglik analysis.
Repeat the assessment from Venus if the selected tradition uses Venus-based Manglik analysis.
Check Mars's sign, dignity, conjunctions and aspects.
Check the strength of the 7th house and 7th lord.
Check Venus, Jupiter and Moon.
Check Navamsa/D9 for additional marriage analysis.
Check cancellation or mitigation conditions.
For compatibility, compare both partners' charts rather than judging only one chart.
Severity
Manglik Dosha is often interpreted on a graded basis rather than as a simple yes/no condition.
No Manglik Dosha
Mars does not satisfy the selected tradition's Manglik criteria.
Mild
A Manglik condition may be present but is substantially mitigated by favorable planetary factors.
Moderate
Manglik indications are present and require evaluation with the rest of the horoscope.
Strong
Mars has a significant Manglik indication with comparatively fewer mitigating factors.
Severity should not be determined from house placement alone.
Cancellation And Mitigation
Mangal Dosha Cancellation / Mangal Bhanga
Traditional Jyotish contains several rules that may reduce, neutralize or cancel the effect attributed to Manglik Dosha. Different schools apply different rules and weights.
| Condition | Details |
|---|---|
| Mars in own sign | Mars in Aries or Scorpio is traditionally considered stronger and more capable of expressing its energy constructively. |
| Mars exalted | Mars is traditionally exalted in Capricorn. Some traditions consider this a major mitigating factor. |
| Benefic influence of Jupiter | Jupiter's conjunction or aspect on Mars is commonly considered a mitigating influence. The strength and functional nature of Jupiter should still be evaluated. |
| Benefic influence of Venus | Some traditions consider strong Venusian influence helpful in relationship-related interpretations. |
| Both partners are Manglik | Mutual Manglik status is widely used in practical marriage matching as a balancing or cancellation principle. It should not be treated as the only compatibility test. |
| Specific house-sign combinations | Some classical and regional traditions define particular house-and-sign combinations where the Manglik effect is considered cancelled or reduced. |
| Functional benefic status of Mars | Mars may function differently depending on the Ascendant. Certain Ascendants give Mars special functional significance. |
Cancellation rules are not identical across all Jyotish schools. A website should present them as traditional interpretive rules rather than guaranteed outcomes.
Ascendant Specific Notes
Mars's functional role changes according to the Ascendant. Therefore, the same Mars placement may not be interpreted identically for every person.
| Lagna | Note |
|---|---|
| Aries | Mars is the Lagna lord. |
| Scorpio | Mars is the Lagna lord. |
| Cancer | Mars has an important functional role because of its house ownership. |
| Leo | Mars can have special functional significance as a yogakaraka. |
Ascendant-specific rules should be applied only after calculating the complete chart.

Compatibility
Mangal Dosha and Kundali Matching
Determine Manglik status of Person A.
Determine Manglik status of Person B.
Check Mars placement and strength in both charts.
Check cancellation or mitigation in both charts.
Compare the 7th house and 7th lord of both charts.
Check Venus and Jupiter.
Check Moon and emotional compatibility.
Check Navamsa/D9.
Evaluate the overall Kundali Matching rather than using Manglik status alone.
Often treated as mutual balancing or cancellation of Manglik influence.
A complete compatibility analysis is still recommended.
The Manglik chart should be checked for cancellation or mitigation before drawing conclusions.
There is no Manglik mismatch under the selected calculation method.
Relationship With Guna Milan
Mangal Dosha and Guna Milan are separate components of traditional marriage matching.
A high Guna Milan score does not automatically cancel Mangal Dosha.
A low Guna Milan score should not be interpreted solely from Manglik status.
Both analyses can be performed separately and then interpreted together.
Remedies
Traditional Mangal Dosha Remedies
The following are traditional religious or astrological practices. They are not scientifically proven treatments and should not be presented as guaranteed ways to change relationship outcomes.
| Name | Description |
|---|---|
| Hanuman worship | Devotees may pray to Lord Hanuman, especially on Tuesdays. |
| Mangal Mantra | Traditional practitioners may recommend chanting a Mars-related mantra. |
| Tuesday observance | Some traditions recommend fasting or observing religious practices on Tuesday. |
| Mangal Shanti Puja | A traditional ritual performed for pacifying or harmonizing Mars. |
| Navagraha Puja | A traditional worship practice involving the nine planetary deities. |
| Charity | Some traditions recommend charity or service associated with Mars-related symbolism. |
Do not automatically recommend Red Coral solely because someone is Manglik.
Gemstone suitability depends on the complete horoscope, Ascendant, planetary ownership, strength and other factors.
Common Myths
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| Every Manglik person will have a failed marriage. | Traditional Jyotish does not require such a deterministic conclusion. Cancellation, mitigation and the complete horoscope matter. |
| Manglik Dosha always causes divorce. | Divorce or relationship breakdown cannot responsibly be predicted from Manglik status alone. |
| Being Manglik is always negative. | Mars also represents courage, energy, determination, protection and action. |
| A single Manglik checkbox is enough for marriage matching. | A complete matching analysis considers both charts and multiple marriage-related factors. |
| A gemstone automatically removes Manglik Dosha. | Gemstone recommendations require complete horoscope analysis and are not universal. |
| Age alone automatically cancels Mangal Dosha. | Age-based cancellation is a commonly cited modern practice, but it is not uniformly accepted as a classical rule. |
